Abstract

A stressful experience can trigger or worsen mental illnesses, such as depression. Depression is a heterogeneous syndrome with variable symptom patterns, course trajectories, and treatment responses. However, the mechanisms by which chronic stress drives individual differences in behavioral patterns remain unclear. Recently, clinical researchers have made extensive efforts to discover subtypes of depression based on biology and/or symptoms to better understand this complex syndrome. Nevertheless, the lack of a subtyping-based approach in preclinical models poses a significant challenge to understanding the neurobiological and pathological implications of psychosocial stress episodes. In this seminar, I will provide an overview of the latest research findings on the molecular and neural mechanisms of stress resilience and susceptibility. I will also present our recent work focusing on individual differences in behavioral responses to chronic stress.
